ZUMBI PALMARES
The day of 20 November Brazil remembers the day of the black awareness, coinciding with the death in year 1695 of the leader of Quilombo de Palmares, Zumbi.
Zumbi was transformed into an icon for the black resistance to slavery and symbol for the fight for freedom. In the 70’s, the date of 20 November was established contrapposing to 13 May, day of abolition of slavery from the princess Isabel in 1888. The date was established as reference date in recognition of the fight of the black for its freedom.
