After a while Picapau got to know at school another friend who practiced capoeira

Samba De Roda
"Samba Ai Samba Acola"
Samba de Roda is a musical variant more primitive
than the samba, originally from the Brasilian state of Bahia, in the
XIX century.
Musical Style
Samba de Roda is an afro-brazilian musical style associated to a dance,
which again is associated with capoeira. It is played to the sound of a pandeiro,
Atabaque, berimbau, Viola and chocalho (all musical instruments), accompanied by
the clapping of hands and singing of the music.
The samba seems to have appeared taking inspiration in first place from an african rythm,
the "semba", it formed starting from sources and took references from the most diverse
tribal african rhythms.
Note that at the time of deportation of slaves from Africa to Brazil,
the cultural diversity, even among the black race of Brazil, was indeed huge.
Subjects of diverse ethnical groups were chosen based on their physical characteristics,
were forced by their owners to live closely with others from different african ethnical
groups, often groups that in Africa would be hostile to each other.
This, beside the change of new land where their had to start live a new life of slavery,
seriously transformed the social environment of the negro race, it influences
in its originalty the creation of the brazilian samba, together with the creation of
musical forms within a different social context.
- The "Samba de Roda" in the territory of Baia, its a mixture of music,
dance, poetry, and fest. Present in all the states of Bahia, the "Samba de Roda"
is practiced mostly in the so called "Recôncavo" region.
The rythm expanded though among different parts of Brazil, especially Pernanbuco
and Rio de Janeiro. Rio de Janeiro, already due to its condition of Federal District,
turned out to become the world capital of the brazilian samba, because it was in Rio
that the samba evolved, acquired its artistic diversity and established finally in the
urban areas as a movement of undeniable social value, as a tool for the negro to face
the political presecution and social rejection, which looked at the black cultural
manifestations a supposed violation of the moral values, attributing them from simple
noise to supposed demoniac rituals. These were the distorted images that racists used
to attribute for example to "candomble", which in reality was religious expression of
the negro race, very important for the african race.
History
Samba has its beginning around the 1860 as manifestation of the culture of the
africans who came to Brasil. Accordindly to the historic research, the "Samba
de Roda" has been a foundation of the "Samba carioca" [from Rio de Janeiro]
This manifestation is divided in 2 characteristic groups: "Samba Chula" "Samba
corrido". In the first, the participants would not dance until the performers start the "
chula", a sort of poetry. The dance starts only after this declaration, when a person at time
dances samba in the middle of the circle (the "roda") along the playing of instruments
and clapping of hands.

In the "Samba Corrido", all would dance samba while the performers and
singers would alternate the singing.
The "Samba de Roda" is bound to the cult of the "Orixas" [spirit or saint] and "caboclos"
[shaman], and capoeira resembles the essence of this. The portuguese culture is also present
in the cultural manifestation through the usage of the "pandeiro" [tamburin], the guitar, and
the language used in the songs.

MACULELÊ
SOU EU
A verdadeira história
Maculelê - Is a type of dance, which is performed on the day of the ceremony for the
“Nossa Senhora da Purificaçao”, Santo Amaro, Bahia.
It seems to have developed from an ancient black ritual into a mix of dance and game of
sticks, which area used from the participants to defend avoiding attacks. In a more elaborated
version of the dance, dances are to play using swords instead of the common sticks, creating a
bigger visual effect of the ritual due to the sparks released by every sword clashing against
another. . .
História
The history tells that Maculelê was a slave who escaped. He was hosted by a local brazilian
tribe who took care of him, but still he was unable to take place to all activitites of the
group since he was not an indigen.
- Sometimes Maculelê was left alone in the village while the tribe was out to hunt.
It was then that a rival tribe appeared to conquer the space.
The dance with the sticks symbolizes the fight of Maculelê against the warriors. Some say that
Maculelê started in "Santo Amaro" [territorio in Bahia] among the negros, as a form
of showing the fight of slaves against the administrators, from there a dance having a "mestre"
with a big charisma, who "defeats" all others.
It was "Popó do Maculelê" the responsible for the divulgation, forming a small group
with his sons, relatives and other blacks from the "Rua da Linha", represented on the
day 2nd of Februarye at the fest of Santo Amaro, "Nossa Senhora da Purificação". Popó
was the driver condutor of a carriage carried by animals in the time the steam still existed. (regular
line of boats of "Santo Amaro" to "Salvador").
During this time the city was served from a line of carriages carried by donkeys, called "trilhos
urbanos", this has been for long time the image of the city. The city stopped existing after the
50's decade. After Popó, Maculelê was practiced before from negros Malês.
